| Shipston-on-Stour is
13 miles south east Stratford. In the 8th
century, it became known as ‘Sheep-wash-Town’
because the
river was used for washing sheep. There are a
number of Georgian houses and old inns, and the church, rebuilt in
1855, retains a 15th century tower. Warwickshire is one of the three
main counties of the Cotswolds, and Shipston is the main town of this
part of the
North Cotswolds. |

| Little Compton is in the extreme south of the county, 11 miles from
Shipston, 4 miles from Moreton-in-Marsh and 13 miles from Chipping
Campden. It was originally in Gloucestershire
but was transferred to Warwickshire in 1845. It is an attractive
village, with many
of the houses built of characteristic honey-coloured Cotswold stone. |
