shakespeare country
Shakespeare Country is the area of Warwickshire which is centred around Stratford-upon-Avon and the villages, buildings and history associated with the Bard of Avon. Local towns to visit include historic Warwick and Kenilworth both of which have magnificent castles: Warwick Castle is the
oldest inhabited castle in continuous occupation in England and is
described as "England's finest mediaeval experience", while Kenilworth Castle is now a romantic ruin. Local places associated with Shakespeare include Aston Cantlow, Bidford-on-Avon, Broom, Charlecote Park, Compton Wynyates, Hampton Lucy, Luddington, Shottery, Snitterfield, Temple Grafton and Wilmcote. Other town's which are well worth a visit are: Royal Leamington Spa with its graceful Regency architecture, award-winning parks and sophisticated shopping; Alcester, a small Roman town with a Heritage trail around the historic buildings; Henley-in-Arden with many Tudor buildings still in evidence; the old coaching town of Southam with its restored Holy Well and mediaeval mint, now a pub; Coughton and Dunchurch with their connections to Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot; Stoneleigh with its magnificent Abbey and Jane Austen associations, part of the grounds of which are now home to the Royal Showground; and Studley, once the largest needle producing area in Europe |

shakespeare country footnotes |
|
The Shakespeare Secret - Warwickshire's own Da Vinci enigma? There are
almost as many mysteries surrounding William Shakespeare as there are around
the Holy Grail. It is
certainly true that although William Shakespeare is arguably the most famous
writer in history, very little is known about his personal life. Over the
centuries there has been much debate as to whether Shakespeare actually wrote
all of the works which have been accredited to him. The doubts arise from the disparity between
the greatness of Shakespeare's literary achievement and his comparatively
humble origin, the supposed inadequacy of his education and the obscurity of
his life. Such range of knowledge, speech and manners, it is said, could only
be expected in a man of extensive education and high rank. The lack of contemporary
records is regarded as incompatible with Shakespeare's eminence and as
therefore suggestive of mystery. That none of his manuscripts has survived has
been taken as evidence that they were destroyed to conceal the identity of
their author.
If
Shakespeare didn't write Shakespeare, then who did? Since
Shakespeare's death nearly four centuries ago, many possible authors have been
put forward, including: Francis Bacon, Edward de Vere (Earl of Oxford), William
Stanley (Earl of Derby), Roger Manners (Earl of Rutland), and Christopher
Marlowe (although he died in 1593 and would have had to have faked his own
death in a tavern brawl if he were to have kept on writing until 1616 -
nevertheless, a theory that does have its supporters). Or perhaps Shakespeare simply
'recycled' other author's works?
Two
William Shakespeare's? Were
there two William Shakespeares? There was cetainly a wealthy grain merchant living in
Stratford-upon-Avon under that name, as well as an improverished actor-playwright of the same name living in
Stratford, East London at around the same time. If so, how did the two become merged into one person? If they
were two people, why did the grain merchant from Stratford-upon-Avon make
bequests to the London actor-playwright's fellow actors, Burbage, Heminges, and
Condell of 26 shillings 8 pence apiece "to buy them rings" (along
with the now infamous bequest of his second-best bed to his wife)? On the
other hand, why is there no mention of any books or manuscripts in
Shakespeare's very detailed will? One
thing is for sure, the mystery will keep academics in conspiracy
therories for generations to come... particularly now that Liverpool
has laid claim to Shakespeare being a scouser.
