Nuneaton is most famous for its associations with the 19th century author George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), one of the leading English authors of the Victorian era. She was born on a farm just outside Nuneaton in 1819 and lived in the town for much of her early life. In fiction, Nuneaton is referred to as "Milby" in 'Scenes of Clerical Life' (1858). She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure that her works were taken seriously.

Wolvey is 7 miles south east of Nuneaton and 14 miles north west of Rugby. It once had a thriving knitting industry and it is recorded that in the Middle Ages there were twenty-seven windmills in the area. The church of St John Baptist  dates partly from the 14th century
