Banbury is known for the 'Ride a Cock Horse' nursery rhyme. Suggestions for the identity the 'Fine Lady' of the nursery rhyme range from Lady Godiva to Queen Elizabeth I, but it was probably just a local girl riding in the May Day procession. The original cross was removed in the 16th century and the present cross was erected in 1859 to celebrate the wedding of the Princess Royal to Prince Frederick of Prussia.
