warwickshire
Described
by residents as diverse as Shakespeare
and J R R Tolkein
as 'leafy Warwickshire', a trip through its verdant countryside will
soon explain the appellation. The area is world-renowned for its
heritage and culture, represented as it is by possibly the world's
greatest dramatist -- William
Shakespeare -- and some extremely fine historic
buildings and stately homes. Two of the finest mediaeval castles are
here: Warwick Castle
-- the oldest continuously occupied castle in England -- and Kenilworth Castle
-- a wonderfully romantic ruin which has royally entertained Queen
Elizabeth I and seen the first planting of a potato in English soil.
Add to these such marvellous buildings as Ragley Hall -- a
beautiful Palladian house in 'Capability' Brown parkland; Stoneleigh Abbey
-- the inspiration for Sotherton Court in Jane
Austen's Mansfield Park; Coughton Court
-- closely linked to the Guy Fawkes and the Gunpower Plot; Charlecote Park;
Compton
Verney;
Baddesley
Clinton; Anne
Hathaway's Cottage; Lord Leycester's Hospital; Lunt Roman Fort; Polesworth Abbey; and
many, many more places of interest. |

THE
GUNPOWDER PLOT
“Remember,
remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder,
treason & plot”
You’ve
only got 15 minutes to save the world, King James
The Gunpowder Plot
was a conspiracy to blow up the King James 1 and the Houses of
Parliament on 5th November 1605. It was dramatically
discovered, just in the
nick-of-time, only the night before... thereby setting the
future theme for many James Bond, and other film hero, cliffhangers.
The conspirators were closely associated with Warwickshire,
particularly the Throckmorton family whose ancestral home is at
Coughton Court and the village of Dunchurch, where the conspirators
waited at the Red Lion Inn for news of the success of the plot.
A remembrance
The evening of 5th November is known in England as ‘Guy Fawkes Night’,
‘Bonfire Night’ or ‘ Fireworks Night’.
Perhaps only the English would commemorate an attempt to blow up
Parliament by burning an effigy of one of the conspirators - Guy Fawkes
- and
letting off fireworks. Whether this indicates a degree popular public
support
for the attempt, or a celebration that it failed, is difficult to say.
The 5th
November was, until 1859, an official day of thanksgiving for “the
joyful day
of deliverance”, enforced by an Act of Parliament.
To this day, the cellars of
the Houses of Parliament are still searched by the Yeomen of the Guard,
before
each State Opening in November to ensure that there is no latter-day
Guy Fawkes
in hiding.
The origins of the
plot
The origins of the plot are unclear but it has always been generally
accepted
that it was an attempt to overthrow the government of King James 1 and
return
England to Catholic rule. The plotters were certainly Catholic but
their
actions would seem to have set the Catholic cause back considerably,
leading to
even more persecution.
The Conspiracy
Theory
However,
some historians suspect that
the plot was the work of a group of agents-provocateurs, who were
anxious to
discredit the Jesuits and reinforce the ascendancy of the Protestant
religion... and who may also have kidnapped Shergar... and who have
Lord Lucan secure in a safe house... and who also transported for Elvis
Presley, in a red london bus, to his moon home... or not, as the case
may be. |
